AIGA Eye on Design

Summary

Parasto Backman uses playful, bold, brightly coloured letterforms and color palette to inform the political aspects in her design. These kind of design practices are breading the palette of graphic design to go against the dominant tradition with modernist grid, breaks the standard of good and bad, and broadens the palette of graphic design.

Collaborative creations with “Unga Klara” and “Novellix” well represents Backman’s vision and feminist, post-colonial, and intersectional perspective. They are norm-critical, not static, and breaks the standard of good and bad that we generally accept.

I believe it is very important for graphic designers to not just follow the conventions/traditions that are perceived as good. It reduces the ability as a graphic designer to be creative, think critically, and be obtuse in understanding the problem. Therefore, Backman’s approaches and perspectives as a graphic designer are worth knowing.
